The Spotted snake eel〔(Common names of ''Ophichthus ophis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 (''Ophichthus ophis'') is an eel in the family Ophichthidae (worm/snake eels).〔(''Ophichthus ophis'' ) at www.fishbase.org.〕 It was described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, originally under the genus ''Muraena''.〔Linnaeus, C., 1758 (1 Jan.) Holmiae. v. 1: i-ii + 1-824.〕 It is a marine, subtropical eel which is known from the western and eastern Atlantic Ocean, including Bermuda and southern Florida, USA, Brazil, Lesser Antilles, Senegal, Angola, and the Mediterranean. It dwells at a depth range of , usually at around 50 m, and lives in burrows on a permanent basis.
